Which Mamanuca island is right for you?

Families, honeymooners, backpackers, surfers and divers each have their island. Here is the short answer and the reasoning.

Every Mamanuca island has white sand and warm water, so the choice comes down to three questions: who are you travelling with, how much do you want to spend, and how much do you want to do? Most islands have a single resort that sets the whole mood, which makes choosing the island and choosing the hotel nearly the same decision.

The quick answer

  • Families: Malolo Lailai (Plantation Island), Castaway, Treasure Island, Malolo Island Resort — and Vomo if the budget stretches.
  • Honeymoons and couples: Tokoriki, Likuliku on Malolo, Matamanoa, Lomani, Tropica, Tadrai on Mana.
  • Backpackers and tight budgets: Mana’s village lodges, Bounty Island, the surf lodge on Malolo — or day trips from Nadi.
  • Surfers: Tavarua and Namotu, or a base on Malolo or Malolo Lailai with daily surf boats.
  • Divers: Mana for the Supermarket shark dive; Malolo, Castaway and Treasure for the barrier reef and wrecks.
  • Total seclusion: Navini, Vomo, Tadrai.
  • One day only: a cruise to Monuriki, South Sea Island, Malamala or a floating bar.

For families

Malolo Lailai is the safest choice: a shallow lagoon, a big kids’ club, plenty of other children and a direct ferry. Castaway is smaller and more polished, with a devoted following. Treasure Island suits younger children because the whole cay is a sandpit. Travelling outside school holidays buys quieter pools and lower prices.

For honeymoons and couples

The adults-only resorts cluster at the two ends of the scale of remoteness. Close in, Likuliku has the overwater bures and Lomani and Tropica offer boutique calm near the action. Far out, Tokoriki and Matamanoa feel properly removed. For privacy above everything, look at Navini and Vomo.

On a budget — and the party question

The Mamanucas are not cheap, but there are ways in. Mana has dorms on a superb beach; Bounty Island has a simple resort half an hour from the mainland; and the surf lodge on Malolo has shared rooms. The other budget strategy is to sleep in Nadi and visit by day cruise.

As for parties: Beachcomber’s all-night reputation belongs mostly to the past. Today the liveliest scene is afloat, at Cloud 9, and in the bars of the larger resorts.

For surfers

The reefs south of Malolo hold Cloudbreak, Restaurants, Namotu Lefts, Wilkes Pass and Swimming Pools. Staying on Tavarua or Namotu puts you closest; surf boats from Malolo and Malolo Lailai reach the same waves for far less. Most breaks are for experienced surfers.

For divers and snorkellers

Snorkelling is good off almost every beach, and best on the outer islands and around Monuriki. Divers head to the Supermarket near Mana for sharks, to pinnacles and passes on the Malolo Barrier Reef, and to easy wrecks such as the Salamanda. Nearly every resort has a dive centre or shares one with a neighbour.

Mamanucas or Yasawas?

Choose the Mamanucas if you have less than a week, are travelling with small children, want a polished resort, or care about surf and floating bars. Choose the Yasawas if you have longer, want emptier beaches and village-run lodges, and do not mind four hours on a boat. Plenty of visitors do both: the Yasawas first, the Mamanucas to finish.

Stay on an island or day-trip from the mainland?

If you have three nights or more, stay on an island — evenings and early mornings, when the day boats have gone, are the best part. With one or two days, base yourself on Denarau or in Nadi and take day cruises; you will see more variety for less money. See where to stay.

Choosing an island: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Which Mamanuca island is best for families?

Malolo Lailai (Plantation Island Resort) and Castaway Island are the classic choices, with Treasure Island for younger children and Vomo at the luxury end.

Which is the best island for a honeymoon?

Tokoriki, Likuliku Lagoon on Malolo and Matamanoa are the three most often chosen. All are for adults.

Is there a cheap island in the Mamanucas?

Mana has backpacker lodges with dorm beds, and Bounty Island and the surf lodge on Malolo are comparatively affordable.

Which island has the best snorkelling?

The outer islands — around Monuriki, Matamanoa, Tokoriki and Castaway — generally have the clearest water. The inner cays are convenient rather than spectacular.

Can I stay on more than one island?

Yes. The ferries link most islands, so splitting a week between two is easy. See getting here.
