At the southern end of the Mamanucas the barrier reef bends out into the open Pacific, and the swells that have travelled from the Southern Ocean break on it with a precision surfers cross the world for. Cloudbreak, a fast, hollow left about a mile off Tavarua, is routinely listed among the best waves on the planet and has hosted world championship tour events.
Tavarua — a heart-shaped speck of about 12 hectares — and neighbouring Namotu are both private surf resorts sold mostly as week-long packages. For years the resorts held exclusive rights to the breaks; since 2010 Fijian law has opened all reefs to everyone, so surfers staying elsewhere can now reach the same waves by boat.
Top things to do: Tavarua & Namotu
Surf — or watch — Cloudbreak
Shallow, powerful and over sharp reef, Cloudbreak is for experienced surfers only, and on big days for experts. Boats sit in the channel, so non-surfers can watch from a safe distance.
Try the friendlier breaks
Restaurants, in front of Tavarua, is a long, perfect left at the right tide. Around Namotu are Namotu Lefts, the right-hander Wilkes Pass and Swimming Pools, the most forgiving of the group and a possibility for confident intermediates.
Everything else the wind allows
Namotu in particular is a base for kitesurfing, foiling, stand-up paddling and fishing when the surf is small.
How to get to Tavarua & Namotu
- Staying on the islands: Tavarua and Namotu arrange their own boat transfers from the mainland coast south of Nadi as part of the package.
- Surfing from elsewhere: surf boats run daily from Malolo and Malolo Lailai (15–30 minutes) and from the mainland around Momi and Uciwai. Lodges and surf camps organise them — see where to stay.
Insider tips
- The main swell season is roughly April to October; the summer months bring smaller, cleaner days and fewer people.
- Bring reef boots, a helmet if you use one, and spare leashes and fins — there is no surf shop on the reef.
- Tides decide which break works. Trust the boat drivers; they surf here every day.
- There are currently no surf trips on GetYourGuide for these breaks, so we link no tour here — book through your accommodation.
