Tokoriki & Matamanoa

Honeymoon islands at the quiet end of the group

By the time the ferry reaches Tokoriki, most passengers have got off. These are the northern outer islands — higher, rockier and quieter than the cays near Denarau, with deep water close in and the outline of the Yasawas to the north.

Tokoriki has a long west-facing beach shared by two resorts: the adults-only Tokoriki Island Resort, a boutique favourite for honeymoons, and the Sheraton, which welcomes families. Matamanoa, a few kilometres south, is a small volcanic cone with one resort for adults on a beach that faces the sunrise.

Top things to do: Tokoriki & Matamanoa

Take the short boat to Monuriki

Both islands are close to Monuriki, and resort trips arrive before the day cruises from the mainland do.

Dive and snorkel the outer reefs

Visibility is generally better out here than near the mainland. Dive centres visit bommies, swim-throughs and the shark sites towards Mana.

Visit Yanuya village

The nearest village, on Yanuya Island, receives visitors from the resorts for church services, handicrafts and school visits. Take a sulu and a small gift arranged through the resort.

Walk the hill

A short, steep trail on Tokoriki leads to a lookout over the outer Mamanucas.

How to get to Tokoriki & Matamanoa

  • By ferry: Tokoriki and Matamanoa are at the far end of the South Sea Cruises Mamanuca route — allow around two hours from Port Denarau.
  • By helicopter or seaplane: around 15 minutes from Nadi, and the way many honeymooners arrive. See getting here.

Insider tips

  • Check the minimum guest age at each resort — policies differ and are enforced.
  • With a long ferry ride, a late-arriving international flight usually means a night on Denarau first.
  • There is nothing on these islands but the resorts. Compare meal plans carefully.

Fiji: Monuriki, Mana Sand Bar & Snorkelling Cruise

The most-reviewed Mamanuca day trip on GetYourGuide by a wide margin. A Fijian family-owned boat heads for the outer islands: a sandbar stop near Mana, snorkelling at Monu Cove and time ashore on Monuriki, the uninhabited island used for the film “Cast Away”. It is a full day and a long way out, which is exactly the point.

  • Swim off the Mana sandbar and snorkel at Monu Cove
